Join the Royal Society of Medicine and Jon Baines Tours in exploring medicine and society in two very different – but richly rewarding – destinations. Travel well off the tourist road and learn about approaches to medicine in Uzbekistan and Japan in the context of their history and culture.
Medicine and Society in Uzbekistan

This new tour has been added in response to popular demand. Uzbekistan is the land-locked heart of Central Asia’s evocative Silk Road. The stunning architecture of its ancient cities links the empires of China and Persia, reflecting myriad layers of history. Travel in the footsteps of Silk Road caravans through Uzbekistan and make a visit to Tajikistan to visit its mountains and archaeological site overlooking the Zarafshan Valley.
Make a number of fascinating medical visits as you travel through the land of Avicenna, a polymath regarded as the father of early modern medicine, including a visit to his birthplace. Examine medicine ranging from a modern teaching hospital to rural care and traditional healing. There will also be ample opportunity to enjoy wonderful local food and wine, including several special meals.

Japan is an intriguing blend of refined ritual, stylised ceremony, ancient history and hyper urban neon. Experience different facets of this exceptional country, travelling at a stunning time of year around the cherry blossom season.
This tour will examine the history of healthcare in Japan and provides real insight into medicine and society in Japan in both rural and urban areas. Learn about cancer care on a visit to the National Cancer Centre and visit the hospital in Tokyo established to follow the “British system.” An examination of primary health care gives excellent insight into society, such as Japanese longevity as a result of diet and lifestyle, and elderly health initiatives.
