The Zoological Society of London was founded in 1826 with the intention of creating a collection of animals for zoological study, as well as establishing a museum and a library. Charles Darwin became a Fellow in 1839 and sat on ZSL's Council, and John Gould, Superintendent of the Ornithological Department, was of inestimable assistance in helping Darwin interpret the specimens he brought back from the Galápagos Islands. Indeed, it was after a conversation with Gould that Darwin wrote ‘One species does change into another.’

Two hundred years after its foundation, ZSL has been through many changes, but its significance in conservation, research and education, and as a learned society, has never been greater. Jim Smith will celebrate ZSL's bicentenary and introduce its new strategy, aimed at protecting species, restoring habitats, training conservationists, and creating change.
