This Spotlight episode will delve into the recently published Independent Review of Gender Identity Services for Children and Young People, also known as The Cass Review, which was commissioned in 2020 by NHS England and NHS Improvement.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Hilary Cass, Chair of The Cass Review, to give participants a comprehensive update on the review. You will have the opportunity to ask Dr Cass questions on the report's key findings and recommendations, such as quality improvement and research infrastructure required to shape future gender identity services offered by the NHS.

Join this one-hour webinar, where experts in the field will:

  • Explore the Cass Review’s recommendations outlined in the report, which set out a different approach to healthcare, more closely aligned with usual NHS clinical practice. These consider the young person holistically and not solely in terms of their gender-related distress. The central aim of future assessment should be to help young people to thrive and achieve their life goals.
  • Describe where there are currently gaps in the research evidence base and what is required for the future. This includes how a full programme of research should be established to look at the characteristics, interventions and outcomes of every young person presenting to the NHS gender services.
  • Understand what is required to deliver new Regional Centres with follow-through services for 17–25-year-olds, and how this will be taken forward by NHS England.

Engage in open and respectful dialogue to exchange perspectives and explore the complexities surrounding gender identity in youth, fostering a collaborative environment conducive to learning, empathy, and mutual understanding.

This session creates a forum for a valuable and thought-provoking discussion about the present state of gender identity services across the UK, exploring the implications of reshaping the landscape of these services in line with recommendations in the Cass review.
