About this event

  • Date and time Wed 12 Feb 2025 from 5:30pm to 7:45pm
  • Location Royal Society of Medicine
  • Organised by History of Medicine Society

This event delves into modern explorations of anatomical knowledge, and blends the artistry of wax imagery, historical book illustrations, and the evolution of anatomical education. It aims to honour Andreas Vesalius's legacy by examining the processes of "unmaking" and "making" the human body, which are key to understanding its functions.

You will also gain a deeper appreciation of anatomical science through the fascinating study of wax medical models.

By attending, you will:

  • View the illustrations of Andreas Vesalius that were often composites rather than snapshots of individual bodies. He considered the unmaking and making of the human body as two important processes by which to understand the workings of the human body.
  • Understand how the design of his book reflects his hope to to convey the unmaking and making of the human body.
  • Consider a series of thought provoking questions:
    • When and how did the explicit directing of the viewers view start in modern medical imagery?
    • What were the specific potentials of anatomical models and clinical moulages in framing and directing the medical gaze?
    • What are the status, value and meaning of these highly telling visual objects as sources in medical history and museology today?
