  • Organised by History of Medicine Society

Join this year’s Sarah Hughes Trust Lecture. Lady Hale will lecture on 'Press freedom and personal privacy – a clash of rights?'

Her lecture will develop the argument that while there is a precious right to press freedom, conversely there is also a precious right to personal privacy. Both are qualified rights that can be restricted with good cause. She will explore these conflicts in-depth and discuss how they may be reconciled.

The lecture will be introduced by Mr Andreas Demetriades, the President of the History of Medicine Society, who will then hand over to the Chair of the Sarah Hughes Trust, Mr Adrian Berry, who will chair the meeting.

After the lecture, the winners of the journalism prize awarded by the Trust and the History of Medicine Society in conjunction with the Medical Journalists’ Association, will receive their award and present their work.

There will also be a short presentation by Joseph Harker, Guardian journalist and Senior Editor (Diversity and Development). Joseph will talk about the Guardian’s and Observer’s Positive Action work-placement scheme which the Trust supports through funding the accommodation costs of participants.

By attending this meeting, you will

  • Learn about the way in which the balancing of rights mediates the relationship between press freedom and privacy.
  • Gain an insight into the current best practice in journalism, humanities and medicine in a historical context.
  • Be able to use this information in everyday life.
  • Be able to promote effective communication between medicine, journalism and humanity.
