This event offers the unique platform to compare and contrast Scotland’s contributions to medicine and surgery, and explore its continued role in medical history and current medical education with two expert speakers.
Mr Iain Macintyre, the Past-President of the BSHM and Past Vice-President RCSEd, will begin the evening describing Scotland’s contributions to medicine and surgery, and their relevance to today’s modern medical/surgical science.
Following his lecture, Dr Andreas Demetriades, President 2024 - 2025 of the History of Medicine Society, Royal Society of Medicine, will deliver his Presidential address, which will also include his vision for the RSM History of Medicine Society activities for the new academic year.
By attending, you will:
- Understand the contributions to advances in the field of medicine and surgery that have been made by Scottish doctors in the period between the 18-20th centuries.
- Develop an appreciation of the Scottish contributions to advances in military and naval medicine and surgery; including the work of Sir John Pringle, Sir James McGrigor, James Lind, Thomas Trotter, Gilbert Blane.
- Learn about the varied contributions of Scottish physicians and surgeons based both in and outside Scotland, including John Hunter, Charles Bell, Sir David Bruce.
