About this event

  • Date and time Sat 20 Jan 2024 from 8:30am to 5:30pm
  • Location Royal Society of Medicine
  • Organised by Clinical Forensic and Legal Medicine, British Academy of Forensic Sciences (BAFS)

In July 2023, 'The Sixth Commandment' TV drama depicted the murder of Peter Farquhar, with a complex police investigation and challenges in gathering expert evidence. It followed a retrospective review that initially suggested accidental death, but later evidence revealed a different story. Another high-profile case, R -v- Rebelo, involved a death due to toxic diet pills (Dinitrophenol), leading to significant legal hurdles and Court of Appeal challenges. The third case under analysis explores when suicide can be considered unlawful killing, particularly when triggered by coercive behaviour from a partner.

Join us for an enlightening exploration of critical legal topics about murder investigations with fresh evidence, the evolving landscape of criminal and coronial law, and the challenging issue of manslaughter in the presence of domestic abuse. Engage with experts, gain valuable insights, and contribute to the conversation.

By attending this event, you will be able to:

  • Consider and analyze the major legal and forensic challenges in complex criminal cases
  • Debate the ramifications of these cases and possible future developments.

This annual event is a joint meeting run in conjunction with the British Academy of Forensic Sciences (BAFS).
